With a purpose

Wendo is a culmination of many years of dreaming, praying and planning. For over six years, we have attempted to bring all that is wholesome and praiseworthy to Wendo. Every aspect of Wendo is dedicated to that dream: to honor God through quality and excellence in our interaction with all users.

Many have prayed and labored to make sure that everything at the camp (from the food service and grounds, to the skilled instruction and construction) is performed and planned.
We are devoted to one simple task: to provide the finest program and facilities to the youth of our region.

Wendo is set within an arboretum that provides a landscaped space where native trees, shrubs, and herbaceous plants are cultivated for educational purposes and aesthetic appreciation.
The arboretum features indigenous trees that have desirable characteristics for the diverse climate of this region, and also includes a nursery where you can get trees, flowers, hedges, kitchen garden vegetables and fresh herbs

Our

Purpose

Wendo is more than just a camp; it is a ministry dedicated to relationships and discipleship providing youth a life-changing experience. From the beginning, it has been our threefold goal to share God’s love, demonstrate (through the lives of our staff) holy living, and explain the challenge of discipleship.
Most of our campers come from Christian backgrounds, but a child of any spiritual conviction is welcomed.

We try to disciple youth using a “lifestyle approach” by spending most of the day in selected activities and recreation and capturing teachable moments on the go, as well as taking advantage of opportunity for reflections and application. Whether it is a gentle hand to teach a particular skill or taking time to reflect on nature’s quiet beauty in the forest, we teach by example and wait for the camper’s response.

Connect with nature

Camp provides children with the opportunity to connect with nature, to participate in human powered activities, and to benefit from personal and primary relationships. While children have fewer and fewer opportunities to be outdoors, the camp experience advances the outdoor learning environment. The environment needs to be experienced to be appreciated.

Promote community

Camp promotes community. It creates this great space that shows children how to live together and care for one another. There are norms and negotiation of boundaries; there are rules.

Develop critical thinking

Camp teaches critical thinking. We’re going to need really strong problem solvers to realize the greatness of our country Kenya. We need the science, math, and biology, but without the ability to relate, connect, empathize, or inspire innovation, how will our children be able to make a difference in the challenges now facing us?

Creates future leaders

Camp creates future leaders. The camp experience offers children a close-up look at compassionate leadership through the camp coordinator, facilitators, and other camp personnel. And they get loads of opportunities to practice being a leader themselves — activity leader, lunch table leader, team captain, the list goes on and on.

Have a lasting impact

Camp has a lasting impact. One of the greatest gifts you can give a child is a sense of success and achievement. Camp teaches kids how to be active participants, ask questions, ask for help, and try new things. They leave understanding that it’s okay to feel a little uncomfortable sometimes, because that’s generally what happens when you’re getting ready to learn something.
